Songbird essentials se602712/8/2023 (not really a 'CON', but just a consequence of an 80 oz feeder. Even without the "flower", the hummingbirds Don't mind at all The migrating "herd" that requires this, needs more the 4 ports, so i just drilled 4 more. So don't use this as an excuse to leave it up for a week or more. Most experts recommend changing juice ever 4 days. I swapped it out for a 2inch "S" hook (easier on the fingers too!) The plastic is flexible enough that you won't do any damage Just pry/pivot, one edge, then keep rotating it away from other piece. You'll need to "pry" the two bottom halves apart, at a "rotating" angle. Note- Unlike many feeders, these sections won't separate by just pulling straight apart. I expected something with this much hydrostatic pressure, to be susceptible to leaks. Maybe that's why they don't fix these design flaws - so you have to buy two and combine.I've owned these for 4 years- Very dependable. JB 3091 model base and combine it with this model's 80-oz. Only idea I have, although it is an expensive one, is buy the Dr. I thought all of the above problems meant I merely got a lemon (plus it had a broken perch) - but I returned the first one, only to find that the replacement was just as bad. What's with this manufacturer? Is it really rocket science, to develop a sensible, efficient and cleanable feeder? Another big complaint about the feeder is that the base only has four holes (ridiculous) and the perch is an odd distance from the feeding holes, making it awkward and uncomfortable for the little guys to stretch their necks so far. Remember folks, if the birds contract any of the above from the feeders, their tongues (among other things) can get infected easily, get swollen (then they can't eat or drink) and then they die a painful death.ģ. Who wants to feed the hummers toxins? Plus, with cloudy plastic, you can't watch out well for cloudy water, slime and the dreaded black mold, all of which indicate fermentation, bacteria and other hummingbird killers. But it already starts out cloudy and, with the sumner's heat, plastic gets hot, warps and emits toxins. The company deceives the customer into thinking it is a jar. And why there are so many complaints that the birds try it out for a few times, then disappear - BECAUSE THERE IS NO SOLUTION IN THE BASE!!!Īfter reading the above, seems to me that nobody in their right mind would want to read further, but here it goes:Ģ. THIS IS WHY THIS FEEDER ONLY GETS ONE AND TWO STARS, on other sites. The reservoir doesn't fill up on its own - you must tilt the jug to get it to empty into the base (then you'll see a bubble come up). Most importantly, there is a major design flaw. Reviewed in the United States on July 2, 2016ġ. It is next to the Perky 48 oz, which on the first day was the feeder of choice, but given the familiarity that is to be expected. The photo was taken the day I hung it up. I can't quite tell if they prefer my other, Perky, feeders (16 oz, 48 oz, and 128). They use both the red and yellow flower petal ports and they do perch. So I drilled additional holes In the Songbird and added spare Perky yellow flower petals. I purchased the First Nature 3091 as suggested, but the base did not screw in tightly. I gave it only 4 stars for the same reasons everyone else has mentioned-too few feeder ports and the perch may be too close. I have a discontinued Perky 128 once, which is fantastic but fragile, I like the size and construction of this feeder. There is one other available on Amazon, but it has a very narrow neck that would make cleaning and filling more difficult. I purchased this 80 once feeder because it seemed like the best large feeder on the market and I needed to get another large nectar container for my many hummingbirds. You'll still lose the juice, but you won't break the container. If you're worried about your hanging hardware, you might consider some cushions beneath. The are heavy when full, so if you drop it, or the hook fails, expect it to crack/break. I've owned these for 4 years- Very dependable.
